Definisi Secara etiomologi Bani bermakna “anak-anak keturunan” sedangkan Israel adalah nama asli nabi Ya’qub As (Eber).
beliau adalah putra nabi Ishaq as bin Ibrahim as. Dia berimigrasi ke Haran wilayah Syiria utara dan nikah di sana, disanalah generasi pertama Bani Israel berkembang.

Sebenarnya menurut hemat kami, Bani Israel tidak selalu diidentikkan dengan yahudi, sebab banyak juga dari mereka bukan yahudi.
Yahudi ialah sebuah istilah yang sedikit rancu sebab bisa merujuk kepada sebuah agama atau suku bangsa. Jika dilihat berdasarkan agama, istilah ini merujuk kepada umat agama Yahudi, tidak peduli apakah mereka keturunan Yahudi atau tidak.
Halakha, atau hukum-hukum agama Yahudi, memberikan definisi Yahudi kepada seorang yang beribu Yahudi; atau seorang yang memeluk agama Yahudi menurut hukum-hukum Yahudi.
Definisi ini diwajibkan oleh Talmud, sumber Hukum-Hukum Tak-tertulis yang menerangkan Taurat, kitab suci asal hukum-hukum Yahudi (lima kitab pertama kitab Tanakh / Perjanjian Lama). Menurut Talmud, definisi ini dipegang semenjak
pemberian Sepuluh Perintah Allah di Gunung Sinai kira-kira +3.500 tahun dahulu kepada nabi Musa. Sejarawan Yahudi non-Ortodoks berkeyakinan bahwa definisi ini tidak diikuti sehingga tidak lama berlaku, tetapi ia mengaku bahwa definisi ini
digunakan sekurang-kurangnya 2.000 tahun sampai saat ini.
Pada akhir abad ke-20, dua kumpulan Yahudi (terutama di Amerika Serikat) yang liberal dari segi teologi, Yahudi Reformasi dan Yahudi Rekonstruksi telah membenarkan orang yang tidak memenuhi kriteria tersebut untuk menyebut diri mereka sebagai Yahudi. Mereka tidak lagi mewajibkan orang memeluk agama tersebut demi memenuhi adat istiadat pemelukan tradisional, dan mereka menganggap seseorang sebagai Yahudi jika ibu mereka bukan Yahudi, asalkan ber-ayah Yahudi.

Siksaan kesedihan yang luar biasa dirasakan Nabi Ya’qub saat terpisah dengan Yusf putra kesayangannya, dalam masa yang begitu lama beliau selalu menangis hingga matanya hampir buta. Diantara mu’jizat yang dimiliki nabi Ya’qub adalah bisa mencium aroma dari tempat yang di tempuh 8 hari perjalanan, ini terjadi saat mencium baju Yusuf, beliau mendapatkan semerbak wangi Yusuf (Tafsir Munir I hal. 398).
Meskipun 11 saudara Yusuf telah melakukan kesalahan telah membuangnya ke dalam sebuah sumur, tapi yusuf memaafkannya karena mereka telah bertaubat atas itu semua. Singkat cerita (selengkapnya lihat surat Yusuf), setelah dipertemukan kembali dengan Yusuf, Ya’qub tinggal bersama putranya di istana selama 23 tahun, dan wafat di usia 147 tahun berketepatan dengan
kematian ‘Ish saudara kembarannya. Atas wasiat ayahnya, nabi Yusuf membawa jenazah Ya’qub ke Syam dan di kuburkan di daerah itu bersamaan dengan Ish dalam satu kuburan (pada syari’at nabi Yusuf mengubur 2 jenazah dalam satu kuburan diperbolehkan, berbeda dengan syari’at nabi kita Muhammad Saw). kisah nabi Yusuf selengkapnya bisa dilihat pada Surat Yusuf.
Pada zaman nabi Yusuf jumlah Bani Israel masih berkisar 72 jiwa, kemudian zaman Nabi Musa mereka sudah mencapai 600.570 jiwa (mereka yang ikut keluar dari Mesir bersama nabi Musa) dan masih ada 1.200.000 yang merupakan marga dzariyyah, jadi total populasi mereka saat itu berjumlah 1.800.570 jiwa saat itu, fakta angka tersebut menunjukkan sebuah perkembangan populasi yang
sangat signifikan, padahal antara masa nabi Yusuf dengan nabi Musa hanya terpaut 400 tahun (4 abad). (Tafsir Munir I hal. 418).
Mulai dari nenek moyangnya nabi Ya’qub mayoritas mereka masih dapat dikendalikan oleh para nabi yang diturunkan kepada mereka, hingga datangnya nabi Musa.

Bani Israel adalah kaum kuat yang paling banyak diceritakan dalam Alqur’an, mereka diberi keutamaan pada zamannya yakni diutusnya kebanyakan para nabi dari kalangan mereka. Berikut beberapa nikmat yang Allah berikan kepada mereka ;
Terbelahnya laut merah menjadi 12 belahan yang di lalui oleh nabi Musa dan 12 marga Bani Israel yang berjumlah 50.000 orang, di belakang mereka sebanyak 1.200.000 tentara Fir’aun (Walid bin Mus’ab bin Royyan) mengejar (Tafsir Munir I hal. 399).
Mendung yang melindungi mereka dari teriknya mentari saat Musa dan 40 orang dari mereka menuju bukit Tursina.
Tertahan terbenamnya matahari, saat mereka yang berjumlah 40 bersama nabi Yusya’ bin Nun bin Afrotsim bin Yusuf as, terperangkap di jurang Taih (berada diantara Mesir dan Syiria), dengan adanya cahaya tersebut mereka dapat menguasai daerah tersebut.Sebab mereka terperangkap adalah karena mereka melanggar perintah Allah agar memerangi kaum Jabbarin.
Turunnya hidangan dari langit yang bernama Manna (buah) dan Salwa (burung yang memilii ekor pendek, jika mendengar petir dia mati) Cahaya yang menerangi mereka di suatu malam sepanjang 9 farsakh (kalau jarak perjalanan yang membolehkan qashar shalat adalah 2 farsakh ini menurut Imam Nawawi 85 km, maka kira-kira 9 farsakh adalah 348 km)
Diberikan batu yang berbentuk kepala manusia yang bisa mengeluarkan air.
Turunnya hidangan (Maidah minassama’) langit pada zaman nabi Isa as.
Turunnya kitab-kitab langit yang agung, diantaranya ; Taurat, Zabur dan
Injil.
Banyak diantara mereka menjadi Nabi, Rasul dan para Raja, padahal sebelumnya mereka kebanyakan menjadi budak milik suku Qibthiyah.
dan masih banyak lagi yang belum tercatat disini. (Tafsir Munir I hal.11)
Sebagaimana nikmat yang banyak pernah dirasakan kaum ini, adzab yang premature (Sari’ul Iqob) juga tak kalah sedikitnya mereka rasakan, akibat kebandelan mereka, diantaranya :

4. Wabah Katak
5. Wabah Darah
Siksa ini terjadi pada zaman nabi Musa as
6. menjadi kera selama 7 hari, selama itu mereka tidak makan, tidak minum dan tidak beranak, ini disebabkan mereka lalai menjalankan ibadah pada hari Sabtu karena keasikan mencari ikan. Ini terjadi pada zaman nabi Daud as.
Disamping itu semua mungkin Bani Israel adalah rangking satu dalam daftar black list umat manusia, kejahatan yang sangat besar adalah membunuh para nabi yang diturunkan kepada mereka, sejarah mencatat Bani Israel membunuh sebanyak 43 Nabi dan 112 orang shalih selama satu hari, hal ini sebagaimana disabdakan orang benar dan dibenarkan Nabi Muhammad Saw kepada Abu Ubaidah (Tafsir Munir I hal. 92). Belum lagi fakta angka nabi yang pernah dibunuh oleh Bani Israel menurut catatan yang lain.
Dengan realita sejarah tadi, Kalau melihat gempuran Israel ke Libanon atau Palestina merupakan sesuatu yang tidak aneh dan baru, hal yang sama pernah mereka lakukan pada masa yang lalu, walaupun saat itu masih ada para Nabi, apalagi sekarang.
Sehingga kekalahan Israel adalah sesuatu yang absolut, artinya lama-lama juga hancur sendiri tanpa ada perlawanan.

Wangsa Daud memerintah di Yerusalem hanya atas suku Yahuzda dan Benyamin, dikenal sebagai kerajaan Yehuda (selatan). Omri (880-874 sM) mendirikan ibukota baru bagi kerajaan utara di Samaria.
Kerajaan utara runtuh setelah Samaria diserbu Salmaneser V dari Asyur dan rajanya Hosea (732-722 sM) ditangkap. Yehuda bertahan sampai Yerusalem diratakan oleh tentara Babel pada Juli 588 sM, dan penduduknya diangkut ke Babel sebagai tawanan II. Negara Yahudi II
1. Wangsa hasmonean
Pada thn 539 sM Koresy, Maharaja Persia menaklukkan Babel dan mengizinkan Penduduk Israel untuk pulang dan disertai izin mendirikan Yerusalem kembali.Alexander Agung (331-323 sM) menaklukkan Persia dan mendirikan imperium yang membentang sampai Asia Barat. Setelah kematiannya kerajaannya dibagi2 oleh para marsekalnya. Yehuda dan Samaria dari thn 320-198 sM dibawahi oleh raja2 dinasti Ptolemeus dari Mesir. Kemenangan raja Seleukus di Panion dekat hulu sungai Yordan membuat Israel berada di bawah kekuasaan Antiokhia Siria. Ketika Antiokhus IV dari dinasti Seleukus memaksakan budaya Helenistis Israel memberontak dibawah keluarga Hasmonean. Setelah perang dan diplomasi yang panjang dibawah Yudas Makabe dan saudara2nya, maka setelah kematian Antiokhus VII berdirilah negara Yahudi II yang merdeka dibawah pimpinan Yohanes Hyrkanus  135-104sM) anak Simon Makabe. Wangsa Hasmonean bertahan sampai perang saudara antara Jenderal Aristobulus II dan Hyrkanus II dipadamkan oleh tentara Romawi pada tahun 63 sM. Tanah Israel kini dikuasai oleh Roma, Herodes Agung dingkat menjadi raja bawahan Roma. Pada Zamannya Bait Suci dibangun kembali lebih besar dan lebih megah dari Bait Suci Salomo. Wangsa Herodes
bertahan sampai Agripa meninggal dunia dan pecahlah pemberontakan di Israel.
Tahun 70 M, Yerusalem diratakan oleh tentara Roma dibawah Titus yang memadamkan pemberontakan dan hanya tersisa tembok barat Bait Suci. Maka berakhir pulalah Negara Yahudi II. Secara tradisi, klaim2 historis tersebut didukung bukti2 sejarah dan arkeologis yang kuat. Maka tidaklah mengherankan usaha kaum Zionis layaknya moyang mereka kaum Zelot yang menuntut
suatu negara Yahudi yang merdeka di tanah nenek moyangnya seperti berabad-abad sebelumnya.
Kesimpulan
Orang Yahuda tidak semuanya dari Bani Israel, sebab Yahudi mayoritas adalah keturunan Yahudza bin Ya’qub (Eber)
Kaum yahudi dan Nashrani adalah kaum yang berpengetahuan pada zaman jahiliyah atau zaman fatrah antara nabi Isa dan Nabi Muhammad, sehingga ketika orang Arab tidak mengerti Nubuwwah-nya Muhammad, Al-qur’an memerintahkan mereka untuk bertanya kepada orang Yahudi akan kebenaran Nabi Muhammad, orang Yahudi yang dimaksud disini adalah Abdullah bin Salam
dan waroqoh, sedangkan orang Nashroninya adalah Bukhara.
Kebiadaban Israel akan membawa kehancuran bagi mereka sendiri.
Kalau ada pertanyaan mengapa Israel keturunan Nabi Ya’qub seperti itu?…. maka pertanyaan itu adalah konyol dan bodoh, apa tidak tahu semua orang di muka bumi ini adalah keturunan Nabi, nabi Adam as, kecuali orang utan.
